2nd GLOBOSAT SCREENWRITERS’ DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

OUR MISSION

Pay TV in Brazil has grown considerably over the last few years; reaching today an audience of more than 60 million viewers. And with a mandate to produce three and a half-hours of original content in prime time every week, plus private and public incentives to finance them, television production is at an all time high, and in a virtuous cycle of content creation. However, Brazilians have no tradition of producing long form, that is, the format Pay TV is mostly made of. So we’ve embraced this challenge as a mission, and determined to cultivate a new generation of screenwriters, in 2012 we created a writer's development program. Every year since then we sponsor a new group of mentors to teach in Brazil. They are the crème de la crème of screenwriting in the most important entertainment industry in the world: successful creators, writers, show-runners and managers actively working in US television. And they are generous enough to share with Brazilians their expertise, knowledge, and a wealth of experience.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to identify original ideas and transform them into great plots and scripts, ready to be presented to the market, eventually being produced by any of the Globosat channels. We try to enable and inspire Brazilian screenwriters to master their creations, and generate meaningful entertaining stories with complex and interesting characters. In a way, we are slowly transforming the entire entertainment industry in Brazil.

HISTORY

The first edition of our writing development program, Programa Globosat de Roteiristas, happened from January to March of 2013. We kicked off with four intense days of McKee’s Story Seminar, with 250 students, and an astonishing 99% approval rate, which we are very much proud of. We followed the program, reducing the group to 40 students and 12 projects, to be worked hands on by a group of amazing and talented mentors in a 5-day workshop: Marta Kauffman (Friends), Barry Schkolnick (The Good Wife, Law & Order), Dan Halstead (Mad Men, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad), and Anthony Zuiker (CSI). Finally, all writers had the chance to pitch their projects to Globosat channels, and 5 of them were picked up for development: Meu Amigo Encosto, O Segredo dos Seus Olhos, Um Belo Dia Resolvi Mudar, Neyla and O Facilitador. Five approved projects out of an original 12 assures us we are on the right track to help the market mature. Globosat, the leader in pay TV, producer Panoramica and curator Jacqueline Cantore have been visionaries in this partnership and are committed to nothing but excellence and quality entertainment. The results will soon be shown on the air.

PROGRAMA GLOBOSAT DE ROTEIRISTAS

In January of 2014 we launched the second edition of our screenwriting, ProgramaGlobosat de Roteiristas, and once again we received nothing but praise and recognition. We kickedoff at the end of January again with the guru of screenwriting, Robert Mckee, this time around lecturing this Genre Seminar to a bigger audience of screenwriters. It was followed by another series of lectures, panels and master classes in February by successful creators andshowrunners, such as Darren Star (Beverly Hills 90210, Sex in The City) and Scott Buck (Dexter). Genrekicked off the Program in four intense and highly informative days providing almost 400 screenwriters anunique immersive experience in Comedy, Love Story, Thriller and the premiere of an unforgettable TV Day. With his method, talent, and pragmatic and charismatic ways, McKee provided insight into the truths writers have to share as well as tricks of the craft and how to thrill, touch, and delight audiences through films and television. The core of Mr. McKee’s teaching is that writing stories is a method of making meaning out of life. In February, it was time for our very busy and very insightful showrunners take the stage. In two unforgettable evenings, we met Darren Star and Scott Buck, who gladly took many questions of the audience in interactive Master Classes. They also dissectedtheirsuccessfulfranchisesof American TV, identifying structuralelements that madetheir work worldwide hits.During the day a series of panels with most important and most successful Brazilian writers gave us the “State of The Union” in television. The audience was in awe. Our mentors are chosen with rigorouscriteria. The experience audience and mentors have is dense, rich, treasured, unprecedent, and to our eyes, historic. The kindness and willingness mentors have in sharing their know-how and experience is unforgettable.
